A Better Tomorrow Starts Today
Embrace sustainable living at SOMO Village.
Good for People. Good for the Planet.
Embracing sustainable living for a brighter future
At SOMO Village, we’re not just about renewable energy; sustainability is our bedrock, underpinning every aspect of life here. From farm to fork, from the materials we use to build, to our culture of wellness and community engagement – it’s all part of our fabric. We’ve intentionally designed our community to foster deep connections between people and the environment, paving the way for choices that benefit both individuals and the planet. We’re driven by a vision – a thriving community where work-life balance isn’t just a buzzword but a way of life. A place that serves as a beacon of sustainable living. Simply put, SOMO Village is good for people and good for the planet.

In 2007, SOMO Village became the first One Planet Community in North America and only the fourth in the entire world.
We received this designation from One Planet Living, an
international program with the vision of a world where we can live happily within the Earth’s resources. This initiative abides by a ten-principle framework that covers various aspects of social, environmental, and economic sustainability.
SOMO Village has adopted these principles and developed
an action plan to monitor our progress for continuous
improvement and evolution.
Sustainable Practices and Initiatives

Solar Power
SOMO Village was built to be carbon neutral by heating, cooling, and powering all homes and buildings with 100% renewable energy generated on-site. We’ve installed more than 11.5 acres of solar modules onto our rooftops which annually produce enough energy to power 233 homes for a year.

Battery Energy Storage Systems
Since 2020, two battery energy storage systems have provided our community with 500kWh of energy storage. These systems are not only a win-win for sustainability since they have no direct emissions and they’re energy-efficient, but they also help us to save costs during peak energy demand times.

Reduced Waste
We leveraged smart design and future recyclability practices to reduce waste by 98% in our community, allowing a maximum of 2% of waste to be sent to a landfill and ensuring 70% is reclaimed, reused, recycled, or composted.

Lower Transport Emissions
Through the provision of top-tier public transit, car-sharing lots, bike paths, shuttles, and sixteen EV charging stations, SOMO Village will reduce emissions by 82% for travel to, from, and within our community.

Locally-Sourced Food
Within SOMO Village, nearly two-thirds of all food will be sourced from our on-site Headwaters Farm and then shared through an all-season farmer’s market, a community orchard, and sustainable grocery stores and restaurants.

Balanced Living
We believe happiness is rooted in the simplicity of a sustainable lifestyle, a close-knit community, and a deep connection to nature, and every aspect of SOMO Village was created with that in mind.
Charitable Initiatives
At SOMO Village, we believe in making a positive impact on the world through philanthropy and community involvement. As part of our commitment to social equity, we support non-profit organizations, charities, and businesses based on three key pillars: Education, Sustainability, and Social Equity.
Giving back is an integral part of our family business. In addition to supporting the community through SOMO Village, the Codding Foundation and family members engage at many levels to support health, education, the arts, and social services in the local region. Our philanthropic efforts help build a stronger and more vibrant community, ensuring a better future for all.
